Absolutely lovely tranquil place to stay. Stayed over the weekend, The Hayloft was warm, comfortable, clean and spacious. The hot tub and sauna was a great addition! Beautiful views! Vimla, The Hayloft, Jan 2017
Booked very last minute on New Years eve, yet Jill was amazing at communicating quickly and helping us with directions to get there. She also recommended us an amazing pub very close by, The Duke of York, which we went to for dinner and loved! The Hayloft was very spacious and really nicely laid out, with great decor. The bed is huge and very comfortable. There is also a spa on site! We didn't really leave the Hayloft for the day and 2 nights we were there as we needed the rest and relaxation. But the countryside surrounding is stunning and another time we would have gone for some lovely walks. Loved the area, loved the Hayloft, loved our stay and plan to come back when we can! Thanks so much Jill! Katherine, The Hayloft, Jan 2017
Fantastic rural location, perfect for a relaxing countryside getaway. Lots of good local pubs serving great food, beautiful walks and great spa facilities to enjoy! Had a truly lovely few days!!! Alice, The Shippon, Jan 2017
We spent a fabulous weekend at Jill's place, the spa facilities are excellent and the kitchen in our apartment was very well equipped. Cannot wait to return, superb hosts, next time I would like to stay in their Shepherds Hut it looks fab! We had a fabulous weekend, thank you for pointing us in the direction of Exeter Christmas Market and RHS Rosemoor we had a great time at both. Hope to see you again soon. Sue, The Shippon Nov 2016
A great place to get away from it all, relax and have some time to recharge those batteries!!! Great hosts, friendly and very helpful! Anthony, Zingaro Wagon, Nov 2016
Jill was lovely, answered all our questions quickly and was very hospitable. Place is very nice and peaceful. Max, The Hayloft Nov 2016
Jill was really friendly and very helpful. The place was really lovely, would definitely recommend. Lisa, The Shippon, Nov 2016
Lovely stay at The Hayloft. Clean, well equipped, warm and location is beautiful! Don't forget to bring flip flops for after your spa! Very quick response time from Jill. Fantastic. Dawn, The Hayloft, Oct 2016
We had a lovely, restful stay. The accommodation is well equipped and spacious. Jill was easy to easy to contact and very helpful. The hot tub was a lovely treat after a cold day out! Sophie, The Shippon Oct 2016
A wonderful place to take a short break away from the city, we wished we could have stayed longer. Jill was a great host, the wagon was comfy clean and relaxing and the wood burner kept us very warm and cosy the whole time we were there. The views over the fields and woods were beautiful. The spa room is a great addition and we enjoyed relaxing in there in our private time allocation as well as the open times for all guests. We also contacted the beautician / masseuse that Jill recommends and had brilliant aromatherapy massages that added to the relaxing trip. The shower and bathroom facilities were very close to the wagon and clean and comfortable. The wagon is in a great location to explore North Devon including beaches, Dartmoor and Exmoor all in an easy drive (in Devon terms at least!) However the wagon is so lovely and comfortable you could arrive with your groceries and just stay there and relax! Thanks Jill we will be recommending! Roxanne, Zingaro Wagon Oct 2016
We had a great stay in Jill's cosy wagon. Despite the compact space, everything you need is cleverly included. The addition of the sauna and hot tub was excellent. For a short or long trip, this is a great place to stay. Jon, Zingaro Wagon Sept 2016
Fantastic property in a fantastic location. Lovely warm welcome by Jill and Paul. Have already recommended a stay here to many friends and family. Paul, The Hayloft Sept 2016
Jill and Paul are wonderful hosts, they are kind and considerate and went above and beyond to help us get the most of our stay. They have gone to great lengths to create a calm and congenial space with a fantastic bbq area with table and seating, the spa is wonderful and a fantastic bonus. The shower rooms are extremely well appointed and very clean. The Zingaro is great fun and very well equipped. We were a family of four and it was perfect as we could eat outside and the kitchen with its hob and sink was wonderfully equipped and had everything you could possibly need. The beds were spacious and the views were pretty. Although the space isn't huge we felt comfortable at all times in our own private space.
Sophie, Zingaro Wagon August 2016
Excellent stay, will definitely come back. The owners are very welcoming. The accommodation was perfect. So perfect, could have stayed longer. The kitchen was fully equipped, had everything you could need. The bed was comfy. Furnished to a very high standard and decorated lovely, home from home. And the hot tub was great. Can not rate this more, one of the best places we have stayed. We will definitely be back. We came to visit family nearby, so now we know where to stay in the future.
Rachael, The Shippon August 2016
If you are looking for a relaxing break within a wonderfully peaceful location then you really cannot go wrong here. The attention to detail within the accommodation is great. You may think this Shepherd's hut is small, but it certainly packs a major punch, able to offer you comfort and a perfect night sleep. With the added benefit of the spa facilities you will leave feeling wonderfully refreshed! We'll be back soon!
Adam, Zingaro Wagon August 2016
The Zingaro Wagon is an extraordinary place to spend your time. It is small but it has everything you need in a very beautiful and unique set-up. We spent one week with our two boys and enjoyed our vacation either just sitting in the garden, preparing dinner at the great BBQ facilities or in the hot tub after a nice walk in the beautiful area. It is equipped and decorated with love for the detail, and you have everything you need. Jill and Paul were lovely hosts and fulfilled all our wishes, and gave us many ideas for our excursions. Our boys were always more than welcome to play with their dogs, they enjoyed throwing the ball again and again. The wagon is located in a very quiet and rural environment, and there are many options for lovely trips to nearby places like the Dartmoor National Park or even to the coast. All in all a highly recommendable place!
Antje, Zingaro Wagon August 2016
Jill was a very welcoming host and made her self available to us should we of had any problems or queries about the area. The hayloft looked just like the pictures and was a perfect get away from our busy life style. The hot tub was an added bonus for us and being able to go in on an evening a relax was perfect! If your looking for an escape to the country then look no further!
Abbie, The Hayloft August 2016
We just had the most wonderful experience with Jill and her family. Everything was as expected and more . Nothing was too much trouble. The hot tub was a real bonus and we enjoyed using the bbq. The countryside is spectacular, we particularly enjoyed the war horse farm park.
Matt, Zingaro Wagon August 2016
Fantastic little break! Enjoyed every moment! Warm and cosy apartment with everything you need. Warm welcome with cupcakes too! Will definitely be going back!
Shabista, The Shippon July 2016
Jill and Paul were superb hosts. Jill was fantastic at communication before our stay, anything we needed to know, she was able to provide the information. When we arrived, Paul showed us around and explained everything in excellent detail. Zingaro wagon, was a little bit of heaven in the most beautiful setting. Right in the thick of rural mid Devon, it truly was tranquility. We both want to thank Jill and Paul from the bottom of our hearts for the most wonderful weekend away, we especially enjoyed the hot tub and BBQ facilities! We would highly recommend staying here and hope to visit again one day! Thank you!
Hannah, Zingaro Wagon July 2016
Stayed at the Shippon for 2 nights and couldn't fault it. The hosts were very welcoming and the property was exactly as described and we both had a very relaxing stay.
Craig, The Shippon July 2016
A little piece of heaven.
Trisha, The Hayloft July 2016
Excellent accommodation in the heart of the Devonshire countryside. We had a wonderful few days in The Hayloft apartment. It was spotlessly clean, light, airy and comfortable with wonderful views over the fields and a small private terrace. It had everything you could wish for with self catering including a good sized fridge, four ringed cooker, grill, oven, basic ingredients such as salt, pepper, oil and spices, plus a washing machine and hair drier. Wi-fi worked perfectly which was important for us as were were on a working holiday. The breakfast hampers were prepared with great care and everything was fresh. The owners, Jill and Paul are delightful, welcoming people and we look forward to returning.
Joy, The Hayloft July 2016
Would love to stay here again. Delicious home made cupcakes on arrival. Beautiful hot tub room. Very friendly owners, made us feel welcome.
Adam, The Shippon July 2016
Jill and Paul are excellent hosts and very welcoming. Cottage was excellent, spacious and clean with all the required facilities. Just like home. Hot tub and Sauna were added benefits just what you want to release the stress. Would definitely want to stay there again.
Saurabh, The Shippon June 2016
A gem of a hide away. Cakes on our welcome, milk in the fridge. The bed was so comfy, the spa facilities a real high light.
Anne, The Shippon, June 2016
Very nice and friendly welcome (nice cupcakes). Beautiful flat, very nicely arranged. Everything you need in the kitchen. Very quiet place. Nice hot tub.
Elise, The Hayloft June 2016
Quality and peace and quiet! Perfect! Well stocked with books and cup cakes were lovely!
Chris, The Hayloft June 2016
Wow! What can I say? What an amazing property in a beautiful part of the world. The Shippon is beautifully decorated and perfectly equity, everything you need for a stay away from home. Jill and her partner were fantastic hosts. Great recommendations on things to do, especially the pub the Duke of York. We will be back again and recommending to others.
Rachel, The Shippon May 2016
A peaceful weekend in a beautiful location. The property is finished to a very high standard and the location is incredibly peaceful and relaxing. The hot tub and sauna in the spa area are a really lovely touch.
Sophia, The Hayloft May 2016
The overall stay was extra comfortable and relaxing. The breakfast hampers were ideal and great value for money. Our sat nav did not pick up the exact location and so the owners directions came in really useful in finding the apartment.
Sam, The Shippon April 2016
First impression, beautiful surroundings and set up. For a self catering booking, all our needs were thought of tea, coffee, hot chocolate and milk even delicious home baked goods which always make you feel welcomed! Owners made extra care in arranging to meet us on arrival to ensure we knew exactly what was what! Warm and friendly greeting, they even took the time to ask our plans and how are weekend was going on passing through out our stay. We loved it so much we will be coming back in the summer!
Emily, The Hayloft March 2016
A true gem - a hide away hayloft - beautifull, thoughful and truely relaxing - every comfort and then some.
Jacqui, The Hayloft March 2016
The apartment was lovely and spacious. It was clean, warm and decorated beautifully. We were sad when the weekend ended.
Nila, The Shippon February 2016
Fantastic stay at The Hayloft from start to finish. Jill was a fantastic host, greeting us with cupcakes on our arrival, giving us honest and helpful advice on the local pubs and offering a late checkout time when we sadly had to head back home! The loft was an effective and stylish use of space, with great kitchen and bathroom facilities that were more than enough for a couple to stay there. We would definitely return given the chance and will be recommending to friends and family as it was a peaceful, quiet and relaxing stay.
Daniel, The Hayloft January 2016
This was our second stay at the hayloft and it was just as lovely as the first time! It is a wonderful cosy space and Jill is a great host. It made for a prefect retreat for the new year in the peace and quiet of the glorious Devon countryside. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will no doubt return in the future!
Veronica, The Hayloft January 2016
The Shippon is in a beautiful small cottage down a country lane in a pretty village called Dowland. The interiors and furnishings are immaculate, homely and very tasteful. Upon our arrival, Jill provided a welcoming treat of Christmas cake! and some milk in the fridge which was greatly appreciated. I strongly recommend staying at the Shippon or the Hays Loft above, Jill is a friendly and very approachable host who gave us many tips and information on the area.
Olivia, The Shippon January 2016
A delightful cottage with everything you need. Jill was very welcoming and helpful. A great find!!
Manika, The Shippon December 2015

We had a wonderful time at the Old Vicarage this weekend. Not only was the cottage beautiful but our hosts were extremely helpful which made our stay stress-free...just what we needed at the end of a long school term.
Simon, The Hayloft December 2105
A wonderful warm welcome (with Xmas cake) from Jill into a beautifully decorated and presented apartment. If any couple is looking for a quiet gat away, look no further.
Walter, The Shippon December 2015
The cottage was beautifully presented and spotlessly clean. The layout and size was perfect for the two of us. We were welcomed with fresh home baked cakes which were delicious and very thoughtful. We will defiantly book another trip to the shippon for next year. We had a fantastic time.
Laura, The Shippon November 2015
We had a fabulous relaxing week at the Hayloft, everything we needed was provided. We wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle which we did but we also had access to Exmoor, the Tarka Trail and the Cornish Coast, so great all round. Thank you,Jill and Paul.
October, The Hayloft October 2105
The Hayloft was a lovely big space that was incredibly cosy and comfortable. Jill made us feel very welcome and the accommodation was well equipped. Thanks for a lovely stay.

Glenn, The Hayloft September 2015
Stunning and clean appartment. Jill was very friendly. Enjoyed walks nearby. Very quiet rural location. Recommended.
Ben, The Hayloft September 2015
The apartment was just lovely! Very private, very clean, very homely and very spacious. We were made to feel very welcome when we arrived and everything was very easy and relaxed. The surrounding countryside and villages were just gorgeous. I would not hesitate to stay here again. Thanks Jill!
Samantha , The Hayloft September 2015
Jill and Paul were absolutely lovely - little touches like a jug of milk in the fridge and some home made muffins were really welcoming. And they had a cafetiere (I'd actually taken our own in case) - we love our freshly brewed coffee. The accommodation is beautiful, clean, very well designed. The tumble drier was a godsend for our beach towels after trips to Westward Ho and Bude.
Jenny, The Shippon August 2015
What a wonderful place! We had the best weekend ever! Such a cosy little place with everything you need! THANK YOU JILL!
Sophie, The Hayloft August 2015
Exactly as advertised and reviewed before. Great location, great space and great hosts. Highly recommended if you are looking for a quiet rural getaway. Thank you Jill and Paul!
Tonny, The Hayloft August 2015
Had a lovely four day break at The Shippon with my mum and sister. We arrived later than expected to a warm welcome, Jill and Paul were incredibly generous with their time and we were immediately relaxed once we saw the accomodation. The welcoming touches were much appreciated and the decor/ layout were both modern, clean and comfy. As others have said the kitchen was well equipped and had all the necessities. We all slept well with both the bedroom and sofa bed being comfier than we have at home! The surroundings are very pretty and peaceful with both coasts within a comfortable driving distance. The information provided on visitor attractions were very helpful - especially the custom OS map! Enjoyed many packed days including visits to Dartington Glass and Rosemoor nearby and very relaxing evenings. Definitely recommend!
Phoebe, The Shippon July 2015
On arrival at the Shippon we were warmly greeted by Jill with freshly iced cake and a laden hamper ready for breakfast the next day. The Shippon is beautifully laid out, and very cosy. Jill and Paul were there if needed, but also left us to our own devices. The surrounding area is great, and the Duke of York nearby is highly recommended!
Alistair, The Shippon July 2015
Jill & her husband was so very welcoming. We throughly enjoyed our stay at the hayloft. The views were lovely & the hayloft was very well equipped with everything you could need. Jill had left us cake and milk in the fridge which was a great added touch. Thank you.
Jack, The Hayloft July 2015
We had a lovely short break at The Hayloft. Jill and her husband were very friendly and welcoming and the accommodation was beautifully presented. We were also provided with very generous breakfast hampers each morning which kept us going for most of the day! It is in a very peaceful and attractive rural location and there are plenty of walks in the vicinity. It is quite secluded, so if you want to get out and about to explore the delights of Devon, you will definitely need a car and an enjoyment of single lane country roads! There are some nice country pubs fairly close by that do good food and it is quite centrally placed, so you can travel to North Devon, South Devon and Exmoor equally easily. We would highly recommend the Hayloft (especially for couples), it is bright, clean, well equipped, spacious (exactly how it looks in the pictures) and Jill and Paul are the perfect hosts!
Nicola, The Hayloft July 2015
Jill and Paul were fantastic hosts, and made us feel really welcome straight away. The Shippon is every bit as beautiful as the pictures show, and there are lots of little details which makes this feel like a home away from home. They provided great recommendations of local places to visit, and even delicious cake as a bonus! Thanks again Jill and Paul, we definitely be back soon.
Jodi, The Shippon July 2015
The Hayloft is a very comfortable living space set in the peaceful surroundings of Mid Devon. It is furnished to a very high standard and is spotlessly clean. The beds are very comfortable so I had no problem getting a great night's sleep to be awoken by the sound of birdsong in the morning. The shower was excellent. There is also a rooftop patio area which was great to use on a summer's evening relaxing watching house martins in flight. Jill was welcoming and friendly as were all the locals in Dowland. It's a rural area so a car is essential to get out and about.
Kathryn, The Hayloft June 2015
The Hayloft was a perfect place for a getaway for my sister and I; Jill and Paul were very friendly and welcoming and told us what we needed to know about the local area. The apartment was very clean and spacious with a well-equipped kitchen, great shower, comfortable beds and fast wifi. The area itself is beautiful and there are great walks and cycle paths in the direct area. It is also less than an hour to drive to the north coast of Devon. All in all a really great place to stay and fabulous hosts. I have already recommended it to my friends and parents! Thanks!
Emily, The Hayloft May 2015
Thank you for hosting us over the May Bank Holiday weekend, we had a lovely relaxing weekend. The Hayloft is a perfect retreat for couples to escape to, it is situated in beautiful countryside and the scenery is stunning. The photo's of the apartment don't do it justice, it is a great place, very spacious and well equipped, we couldn't of asked for more. The cupcakes were much appreciated after the long drive. Jill and Paul were very friendly hosts and provided us with some background information on the area. Over the weekend we went cycling along the Tarka Trail and tried our hand at surfing. In the evening we walked to the local pub, where the staff looked after us well. A great weekend, I only wish that our stay had been longer!
Emily, The Hayloft May 2015
The village and accomodation were both gorgeous, with a large private garden and homely feel straight away. Thank you for being wonderful hosts and for the delicious food we were treated to each morning, we would definitely recommend - perfect weekend.
Brent, The Shippon May 2015
The Hayloft is clean, spacious and very comfortable. Jill and her husband are friendly and welcoming. The local pub the Duke of York serves good pub food. We had steak and kidney pudding; it was delicious. A relaxing long weekend in pretty countryside :)
Melanie, The Hayloft May 2015
The Hayloft was fantastic! Jill and Paul were superb hosts. The breakfast, accommodation and hospitality will not be beaten! We will be heading back soon!
Paul, The Hayloft May 2015
My girlfriend and I had a wonderful stay at the hayloft. Jill and Paul were incredibly welcoming and greeted us when we arrived before showing us around and explaining where local shops etc. were. The hayloft itself is finished to a really nice standard and has everything you could need. The bed in particular was really comfortable and the shower was amazing! Jill also provided us with a breakfast hamper every morning, we opted for the continental style one although there is the option of having a cooked breakfast hamper instead. The hamper had a generous selection of yogurts, granola, fruit, breads and pastries. This was a really nice touch and we really enjoyed waking up to such a nice breakfast each morning. We'll definitely look to stay here again if we return to North Devon.
Alex, The Hayloft April 2015
Jill gave us a warm welcome when we arrived. We were easily able to contact her before our stay. The Hayloft was beautiful. Well finished and kitted out with everything you could need, Jill even left us some milk in the fridge and there were tea bags and things there for our stay. The shower was lovely! And the bed was really comfortable. The area is very quiet and peaceful. You definitely need a car to get around but there are also some villages in walking distance which we visited during our stay. Lovely apartment, lovely area, lovely weekend.
Holly, The Hayloft, April 2015
We had a wonderful 5 day stay with our two children in The Shippon. Jill, Paul and their lovely family are warm and generous. Thoughtful touches made us feel very welcome and their local knowledge was invaluable. The cottage is fantastically comfortable, spotless and couldn't be better equipped. It is spacious and bright and the beds so cosy! The gardens and immediate local area is stunning. There is a very well stocked shop and two gorgeous 'proper' pubs nearby. While there is plenty to do within 40 mins of the house both coasts are easily accessed from The Shippon. We barely scratched the surface in 5 days... Thank you for having us!
Victoria, The Shippon April 2015
Jill gave us a warm welcome with little cupcakes and asked from time to time if everything was ok. The Hayloft is lovely just like on the pictures. It is one big room. We stayed there for 4 nights and used the kitchen which is very good equipped, even a washing machine is available. I really recommend this place to stay. There are two single beds which can be used as a king size bed and a sofa which can be used as a bed.
Maximiliane, The Hayloft April 2015
